WASHINGTON - A Harare magistrate on Wednesday fined Fadzayi Mahere, interim spokesperson of the Citizens Coalition for Change, US$500 or three months in jail for publishing falsehoods.

Magistrate Taurai Manwere ruled that Mahere undermined the authority of the police when she tweeted that a policeman beat to death a baby that was strapped on its mother’s back.

Manwere said the tweet eroded the public’s confidence in the law enforcement agents.

In a tweet, Mahere, who was facing up to 20 years in jail, said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you STRONGER.”

She did not elaborate.

Another CCC leader, Job Sikhala, has been in remand prison for almost a year facing charges of inciting violence.

He has denied any wrong doing. Sikhala has been denied bail multiple times.
