Movement for Democratic Change president Douglas Mwonzora on Monday expelled his deputy, Elias Mudzuri, following a fallout between the two and several other members of the party, who allegedly undermined his leadership by claiming that he was not legitimately elected recently.

Mwonzora also demoted senior party member, Morgen Komichi, by reducing him to a mere secretary in the powerful power organ – the standing committee of the party.

He told reporters in Harare that Mudzuri and his colleagues violated the party’s constitution by filing a court case against him, claiming that he was not legitimately elected MDC-T president.

Others who were also expelled are businessman Norest Marara, Edwin Kakora, Gift Konjana, Den Moyo and Edwin Dzambara.

“In terms of our constitution, they have expelled themselves from the party by taking the party to court. In terms of clause 5.10a of the constitution of the MDC, if you take the party to court, you automatically expelled yourself from the party.

“We no longer have jurisdiction over them. We wish them good luck. I know that they are going to be forming a party and we wish them the best of luck there, but they are no longer members of the MDC.”

The MDC-T convened a national Congress recently in which Mwonzora was elected unopposed. Mudzuri and others, who were unreachable for comment, claim that he was not properly elected.
