Zimbabwe Riots

The chairman of the parliamentary portfolio committee on youth affairs, Omega Sibanda, says he is now compiling a report for submission to parliament over the violence that rocked a public hearing over the revival of the national youth service in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

Some of the attendees say they were beaten up by suspected Zanu PF youths for voicing opposition to the reintroduction.

Newsday reported that another meeting was disrupted in Watsomba, Manicaland, by rowdy youths.

Ruling party information and communications director, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, denies Zanu PF members were involved.

Government says it is planning to revive the notorious program next year, which the opposition fears will be used to unleash violence against its members ahead of the 2023 polls.

In 2018, government made a commitment to reduce the size of the bloated civil service by getting rid of the youth, commonly known as ‘Green Bombers’. There were over 70,000 ghost workers, mostly national youth service members, on the state’s payroll at that time.

The youth were part of the late former President Robert Mugabe’s government.
