Teenagers Arrested Following Spate of Acid Attacks in London

Emergency response following acid attack on the junction of Hackney Road with Queensbridge Road, London, July 13, 2017.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with a series of acid attacks that left several people with facial burns in east London, police said Friday.

One of the victims has sustained "life-changing" injuries, police said.

According to authorities, two assailants on a moped tossed acid at a 32-year-old man and stole his moped before carrying out a number of other attacks over the course of 90 minutes Thursday night.

Two boys, ages 15 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of robbery and grievous bodily harm, police said. The investigation continues.

The assaults come after a number of high-profile attacks in London, including a case in which a man is accused of throwing a corrosive substance at an aspiring model and her cousin as they sat in their car.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said that while such incidents are increasing, they are still rare.

"I don't want people to think that this is happening all over London all of the time — it's really not, but we are concerned because the numbers appear to be going up," Dick told the LBC radio station in an interview.
