President Joao Lourenco of Angola, who is also the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa and King Mswati III of Eswatini for holding what he called exemplary elections.

Lourenco made these remarks at a virtual SADC Extraordinary Summit held Tuesday despite calls by the opposition in Zimbabwe for fresh elections which the SADC observer mission and other organizations said fell short of regional and international polls.

The SADC observer team has handed its damning report to regional leaders who in turn parceled it out to President Mnangagwa. The Zimbabwean leader has dismissed suggestions for fresh elections.

But the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa insists the country should hold free, fair and credible elections.

Reacting to the Angolan leader’s remarks, Chamisa’s party said, “We urge SADC to urgently tackle the genuine risk posed by the sham August plebiscite to regional stability. The crisis cannot be disregarded, as it visibly strains social services in neighboring countries and lays the groundwork for widespread insecurity.”
