Zimbabwe's ruling party has fired another provincial chairman.
Philip Chiyangwa was expelled today (Monday) nearly two months after his arrest for allegedly spying on South Africa. Mr. Chiyangwa was the provincial chairman of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front. If convicted, Mr. Chiyangwa faces up to 20 years in prison.
Six other provincial chairmen were fired in December after getting caught up in a party power struggle. The dispute followed the selection of Joyce Mujuru as one of Zimbabwe's two vice presidents, placing her in line to succeed 80-year-old Robert Mugabe as the country's president. The expelled chairmen all favored another partly leader for the position.
The developments come as Zimbabwe prepares for parliamentary elections on March 31st. Zimbabwe has 10 provinces that are governed by chairmen within Mr. Mugabe's government.
