A Botswana magistrate, Mareledi Dipate, on Thursday issued a warrant for the arrest of former president, Retired Lieutenant General Ian Khama, who is accused of violating some provisions of the firearms law in the country.
According to a local newspaper, Mmegi, the magistrate ordered police to apprehend Khama and bring him before Broadhurse Magistrate Courts.
His co-accused are former spy chief Isaac Kgosi, suspended police commissioner Keabetswe Makgophe and Victor Paledi.
They have in the past appeared in court facing charges of violating section 9(1) of the Arms and Ammunition Act. Khame was allegedly found in possession of an illegal firearm. He also allegedly falsely procured and registered a firearm.
He has denied any wrong doing.
Khama retired in 2018 in accordance to the country’s presidential constitutional limits.
