Zanu PF has won five out of six council seats following by-elections held on Saturday, a week after opponents of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government were beaten up in Matabeleland region by suspected ruling party activists.

In a tweet, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said Zanu PF beat Citizens Coalition for Change in Insiza, Matobo, Buhera, Midlands’ Ward 6 and Guruve.

The CCC led by Nelson Chamisa won in Mutare in which Professor Lovemore Madhuku’s National Constitutional Assembly also featured a council candidate.

Zanu PF registered its biggest win in Buhera where its candidate, Ernest Muzokomba, got 1,265 votes. CCC candidate, Joram Muzamba, amassed 692 votes.

In Guruve’s Ward 4 in Mashonaland Central, Zanu PF’s Season Chiguma got 1,135 votes and CCC’s Wonder Francis Kudyahakudadirwi received 114 votes.

In Insiza’s Ward 4, Daniel Dube of Zanu PF garnered 578 votes and Augustine Gumede of CCC got 415.

The ruling party also won in Matobo’s Ward 2 where Fadreck Siwela of Zanu PF got 934 votes and CCC’s Sindiso Ngwenya received 270 votes.

In Mutare’s Ward 18, CCC’s Blessing Marindashaka beat Zanu PF’s Loveness Chiwashira by more than 233 votes. Marindashaka got 711 votes.
