The late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe was today conferred with an honorary award by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), currently holding a Heads of State and Government Summit in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Others, who received similar awards posthumously, are Julius Nyerere, Augustino Neto, Seretse Khama, Samora Machel, Kamuzu Banda, King Sobhuza II and Kenneth Kaunda.

Former First Lady, Grace Mugabe, received Mugabe’s award. This was perhaps the first time in almost two years that Mrs. Mugabe shook hands with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who toppled her husband in a defacto military coup in 2017.

According to the state-controlled Herald newspaper, the SADC founding fathers were honored for the role they played in setting up the 16-member southern African bloc.

The newspaper also reports that there were also some secondary schools and media awards.
