Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, has joined the chorus of some Zimbabweans questioning the benefits of President Robert Mugabe’s recent trip to China.
Details about the trip and the deals Harare says it clinched remain shrouded in secrecy though the state-controlled media has been saying the country signed “mega deals” with China.
Zanu-PF has congratulated Mr. Mugabe for a successful trip though the finer details that Zimbabweans want to hear as they yearn for an improved economy, remain sketchy.
Pressure is mounting on President Mugabe and his cabinet to divulge details about his trip to China.
Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa, who accompanied Mr. Mugabe to China, was evasive in parliament Wednesday as he refused to furnish the house with details of the trip.
Chinamasa could only say Harare had secured commitments from China to fund bankable projects in several sectors, in particular infrastructure development.
Business executives, who were excluded from the trip, have also been questioning the benefits of the much-publicised trip.
Zimbabwe needs $27 billion to fund its economic turnaround programme, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Social and Economic Transformation (ZIMASSET).But funding of the ambitious project has remained problematic.
In our last part of the interview with Mr. Tsvangirai, the MDC leader told VOA Studio 7 that Mr. Mugabe is misleading Zimbabweans about his trip.
