Zimbabwe Cabinet Approval of Civil Service Audit Irks Workers

Civil servants are complaining that the government did not update them on the audit findings.

Civil servants say they are not happy that the government has approved the civil service audit without first consulting them as is expected under the National Negotiating Council.

Apex Council chairman Richard Gundani told VOA Studio 7 they were surprised to learn through the media that Cabinet had approved the audit and recommended a raft of changes in the civil service.

Gundani said the changes affect them as civil servants hence the government should have consulted and alerted them in advance.

The approved changes include the abolition of all vacant posts, the re-introduction of the transport allowance and the cutting of student teachers’ allowances from $329.00 to $157.00 a month.

Civil servants will also be expected to make a 7.5 percent pension contribution to the Public Service Pension.

Gundani said they will soon call for an urgent meeting with the government seeking clarification.

“All the leaders in the different unions are just waiting for a very urgent meeting where we are going to input into this critical process.”
