Beitbridge Town Council secretary Loud Ramakgapola says the situation is getting back to normal in the district following flash floods that hit the southern border area last Friday night affecting close to 800 people.
Ramakgapola said they managed to get assistance in the form of food, blankets, clothes and water buckets from the government and other well-wishers. Of the 777 people affected, 285 are children.
He said the water levels reached window level in some areas forcing the affected people to seek refuge on rooftops.
“Those people with durawalls were also affected after the precast walls failed giving way to the raging water,” Ramakgapola said.
He told Studio 7 they were now working to address issues of drainage in the worst affected areas.
“Our health teams have been going around inspecting the drinking water and also done disinfections, but obviously we are still monitoring the situation,” he added.
The council had to pitch tents at Dulibadzimu Clinic as alternative shelter, though some residents have started cleaning up their damaged houses.
