WASHINGTON —
Zanu PF’s supreme decision-making body, the Politburo, Thursday night conferred national hero status to the late former cabinet minister and veteran journalist, Nathan Shamuyarira, who died Wednesday night at a local hospital.
Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo said Shamuyarira’s body was Friday flown to Chinhoyi in Mashonaland West province to give people in his province an opportunity to pay their last respects.
The body will be taken back to Harare in preparation for his burial Saturday.
Gumbo said the decision to declare him a national hero was unanimous. This, regardless of the fact that the late Shamuyarira once left Zanu to form another political party called the Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe (FROLIZI) during the liberation struggle.
Shamuyarira died at age 85.
Meanwhile, former Zanu PF co-chairperson of the Constitutional Select Committee that spearheaded the crafting of a new constitution in Zimbabwe, Paul Mangwana, has decried the absence of a body to monitor the implementation of the constitution following its adoption in last year’s referendum.
Nathan Shamuyarira left active politics in 2010 to dedicate time to putting together a book on Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, especially a memoir on President Mugabe’s central role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.
