WASHINGTON DC —
The Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (JOMIC) is winding down its operations beginning Monday with some of its personnel surrendering vehicles at its head office in Harare’s Avondale suburb.
JOMIC communications manager Joram Nyathi said the multi-partisan panel’s term has finally come to an end following the adoption of a new constitution.
Nyathi said the winding down process will be in phases and may go up to next month.
He said efforts are being made to ensure that JOMIC will continue its operations.
Sources said representatives of the two Movement for Democratic Change formations last week met with a Zanu PF team that was led by secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa in an effort to try and save the panel from collapsing.
But Mutasa is said to have requested for some time to consult his principal, President Robert Mugabe.
JOMIC co-chairman Elton Mangoma of MDC-T said there are also plans to transfer some of JOMIC’s responsibilities to a forum under some top officials of the three parties which were in the government of national unity, known as the Secretary Generals’ Platform.
