Prosecutor general Johannes Tomana faces a tribunal that might see him being removed from office.
The Judicial Service Commission, which consists of the chief justice, judge president and other judges of the High Court and may be appointed from time to time, says Tomana is not a “fit and proper person” to continue as prosecutor general for allegedly defying court orders.
But Tomana has filed an urgent chamber court application seeking an interim order to stay the process. Government insiders say President Robert Mugabe will soon appoint a tribunal to start the process of removing Tomana from office.
Efforts to get a comment from Tomana’s lawyer Thabani Mpofu were futile as he did not respond to calls.
But University of Kent law expert Alex Magaisa says the removal of Tomana is long overdue.
