WASHINGTON DC —
Some Zimbabweans are said to be withdrawing large sums of money from commercial banks fearing the incoming Zanu PF government may re-introduce the Zimbabwe dollar.
Bankers say clients fear that they may lose their deposits in various currencies in the same manner they lost billions of worthless Zimbabwean dollars when the country introduced a multiple currency system in 2009.
The bankers say they have informed their clients not to panic as the new government is unlikely to re-introduce the Zimbabwe dollar this year.
Banker Samson Nhliziyo said they are telling people not to withdraw money from their accounts in fear of the new government.

But Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo said his party will still use the multiple currency system until the dollar is systematically phased out.

In a related development, exiled MDC-T politician Roy Bennett is calling on fellow citizens to stop paying their bills as a way of expressing their disapproval of the vote his party says was stolen from them.

Gumbo said these remarks are nonsensical and meant to cause friction among Zimbabweans.
