Zimbabwe Ambassador to Mozambique Douglas Nyikayaramba Succumbs to COVID-19

Several top government officials have succumbed to COVID-19 in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique, Retired Lieutenant General Douglas Nyikayaramba, has died of COVID-19.

According to the state-controlled Herald newspaper, Nyikayaramba died today at St. Anne’s Hospital in Harare and his death was confirmed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at a Cabinet meeting.

He was appointed the country’s ambassador to Maputo in 2019.

Nyikayaramba’s colleague, Jetro Ndlovu, who was the Zimbabwe ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, died recently in Harare.

Some top government officials who died of COVID-19 include Foreign Affairs Minister Retired Major General Sibusiso Moyo, Manicaland Provincial Affairs Minister Ellen Gwaradzimba and Transport Minister Joel Biggie Matiza. Others are former Prisons and Correctional Services boss, Paradzai Zimondi, and former Education Minister and Mashonaland East Governor Aeneas Chigwedere.

In its daily report posted on Twitter, the Ministry of Health says 13 people died of COVID-19 in Zimbabwe on Monday and 106 tested positive for coronavirus.

:As at 8 February, 2021, Zimbabwe had 34,658 confirmed cases, including 28,825 recoveries and 1,339 deaths.”
