WASHINGTON DC —
Five Zimbabwean young community leaders Tuesday night finished a four-month training program in the United States where they were on a Community Solutions program sponsored by the US State Department and the International Research and Exchange Board.
The program is a professional development scheme for the best and brightest global community leaders working in transparency and accountability, tolerance and conflict resolution, environmental issues and women and gender.
One of the young leaders, Philip Takwana Muyengwa, said he has benefited a lot and hopes to implement some of the skills he acquired in the USA when he goes back to Zimbabwe.
Muyengwa runs the Youth Initiatives for Community Development Trust, a project which seeks to build the capacity of the Mutoko community to advocate for their environmental rights and fight for greater transparency and accountability in the extractives industry.
The young community leaders who participated in the 2013 Community Solutions program were drawn from Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
