The Movement for Democratic Change formation of former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says it supports the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe’s position for teachers to go on a nationwide strike when schools open next week if on-going salary negotiations between civil servant unions and government representatives fail to yield positive results.
MDC-T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora says it is high time the government honoured its election promises of improving civil servant salaries in line with the poverty datum line, currently pegged at $570.
Mwonzora said as a labour party they will make sure that the Zanu PF is pressured to honour its pledges.
The PTUZ has threatened strike action when school opens next Tuesday but some civil servant union leaders say their organisations want to give dialogue a chance.
Labour Minister Nicholas Goche said he was not in a position to comment since negotiations were still in progress. But he told the independent newspaper Newsday that no union has approached him with the intention to strike but added that “any job action should follow proper procedures as stipulated by the Labour Act”.
