U.S. Urges Zimbabwe Students to Apply For Sports Scholarships

The United States Embassy in Harare has urged students interested in persuing their education and sports in America to apply for sports scholarships which are offered free of charge to successful candidates.

The US Embassy’s EducationUSA advisor Rebecca Zieglar Mano said in the past year nearly 100 students were awarded scholarships and over 10 of the applicants were sports-based scholarships.

Mano said to qualify for such scholarships, one has to be engaged in sporting activities at national level and be in possession of an Ordinary Level certificate with good high school grades.

In a statement, she said some of the beneficiaries include Olympic gold medalist swimmer Kirsty Coventry, track athletes Brian Dzingai and Ngoni Makusha and soccer players Joseph Ngwenya and Mkhokheli Dube.

Earlier this month, another group of students left the country for the United States under sports scholarships.

They include sprinter Pamela Zitsanza (Truman University), long distance runner Clever Mukori (Evansville State University) and hockey players Karrine van Rooyen and Robin Stevenson (St. Francis and East Stroudsburg universities).
