Zimbabwe Cabinet Steps in to Normalize Voter Registration Drive

  • Jonga Kandemiiri
The Zimbabwe cabinet met in Harare on Tuesday and agreed that the Registrar-General’s Office should quickly address complaints being raised by the public, especially payments for lost identity cards which it recently suspended and the role of village heads in issuing identity documents.

It also agreed that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission should announce centers for the mobile voter registration exercise a few days before the mobile teams’ visits.

Reports from various districts indicate that the process is still chaotic since it was launched last week Monday.

In Uzumba constituency in Mashonaland East province, the team will be at Rudawiro Primary School in Ward 11 until Wednesday before going to Musanhi Primary School, Chidodo Primary, Uzumba High School and Chitimbe Primary School from May 17 to May 19.

Peckson Kazingizi , Uzumba constituency candidate for the Movement for Democratic Change of Prime Minister Tvangirai, said it is disturbing to note that people who cannot afford to pay for their identity cards in cash are being asked to pay in kind.

Zanu PF Goromonzi North Member of Parliament, Paddington Zhanda, said he is hopeful that the mobile voter registration program that started in his constituency Tuesday, will be a success because he did his best to publicize it.

The mobile teams in Goromonzi district will be in Ward 5’s Pote Clinic on Wednesday before moving to Ward 4’s Zimbiri Primary School on Thursday.

The team will thereafter move to Sally Mugabe Primary School, Chabwino Primary School, Remari, Ivordale and a few other schools.
