There are mixed feelings among civil servants following the government’s decision to honor its pledge to award them a 5.3 % inflation-related salary increment.
Most government employees saw the increase, backdated to January, reflected in their February salaries.
Sources, however, said officers in the military and the police will have to wait until March to get their increase.
Apex Council chairman David Dzatsunga said most civil servants are disgruntled over the increment.
Dzatsunga said this was not a salary increment, but a cost of living adjustment which does not help workers when they retire.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) general secretary Raymond Majongwe said their members are very disappointed and feel that the government has failed to respect.
But Zimbabwe Teachers Association said it welcomes the increment since they don’t have anyone representing them in the negotiations with the government.
