Zimbabwe Civil Servants Demand Stake in 2013 Budget

  • Jonga Kandemiiri
Civil servants are demanding a say on the 2013 national budget through proposals they drew up in a meeting of the Apex Council in Harare on Tuesday.

Apex Council chairman David Dzatsunga said they were denied the opportunity to meet in person with Finance Minister Tendai Biti and present their demands to him.

Dzatsunga said as a result, they decided to prepare a written proposal they hope they can hand deliver to the minister soon.

Among the several demands are requests for the government to cut down on executive expenditures, which they said are too high, and to link salaries to the poverty datum line instead of the official inflation rate.

Mr. Dzatsunga said though they appreciate the bonuses they started receiving Tuesday, they are not happy that the payments will be staggered.
