Company Closures Force ZCTU to Scale Down May Day Events

WASHINGTON DC —
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says it has been forced to cancel this year’s May Day commemorations in 17 of its 36 districts.
The labour union attributes this to the closure of many companies around the country due to continuing economic hardships.
This year’s May Day theme is “Workers Under Siege, Organise and Move on”.
ZCTU secretary general Japhet Moyo said the main event to mark the day will be at Gwanzura Stadium in Harare where they will use the day to push the government and the private sector to adopt the poverty datum line as the minimum wage.

Secretary general Raymond Majongwe of the splinter labour union calling itself the Concerned Affiliates of the ZCTU, said they have plans to mark the day on their own throughout the country with a main event planned for Raylton Club in Harare.
Majongwe said their theme will be “Fighting for Poverty Datum Line, Worker Safety and Empowerment” and will also be fighting for a minimum wage commensurate with the PDL, currently pegged at around $550 a month.
