Chitungwiza Municipality to Suspend More Workers

A Chitungwiza workers’ union official says the satellite town Wednesday continued to issue suspension letters to employees who participated in last month’s five day strike.

Fortune Mushonga of the Chitungwiza Workers’ Union said the development has instilled fear in workers who were planning to demonstrate Wednesday to force the municipality to re-instate six suspended union officials.

The six were suspended on allegations they incited other workers to join the strike.

The six are expected to appear before a disciplinary hearing Thursday.

Sources said the municipality plans to suspended 890 of its 1,600 workers for taking part in the crippling strike.

Studio 7 failed again to get a comment from the municipal authorities as their mobile phones were not reachable.

But Mushonga said they hope that they will succeed in holding a demonstration Thursday because they have mobilized workers to engage in the industrial action.
