Movement for Democratic Change founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai is currently in Britain at the invitation of the UK-based think tank, Chatham House, to talk about the state of the country, following the 2013 elections.
Mr. Tsvangirai, who also met with Mark Hammonds, the Parliamentary Undersecretary of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, said he welcomed Britain’s invitation as an opportunity to fulfil his party’s strategy of global engagement, and to inform the world about what is happening in the country.
The opposition leader has been calling for dialogue with the ruling Zanu-PF, other opposition political parties and civic groups, to help the country move past its economic and political stagnation. Tsvangirai said Britain and other Western nations can help facilitate the dialogue in the country, as they did through SADC, in 2008, following a violent election, that resulted in a unity government.
During his trip, Tsvangirai also met with his party’s supporters in Birmingham, where he held a fundraising dinner, for his party, according to his spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka.
Mr. Tsvangirai told Blessing Zulu of VOA’s Zimbabwe Service, that he remains hopeful that change will come to Zimbabwe, in due time.
