Kirsty Coventry Qualifies for Semis in 200 Meter Swimming Competition

Zimbabwe Olympic Swimmer, Kirsty Coventry

Zimbabwe’s swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry has qualified for the semi-finals of the 200 meter backstroke competition after coming 9th in the second heat.

Zimbabwe Olympics press officer, Merit Munzwembiri, told Studio 7 soon after the event that Coventry is now set to compete in the semi-finals this evening.

"It's exciting times ... So, we will be back at the Olympics Aquatic Pool to see how she will perform. It's very exciting, it has brought back the mood that we might finally indeed be able to have a podium finish at the 2016 Olympics."

Coventry registered a swimming score of 2:08:91 in heat 2 of the 200 meter backstroke competition.

"Team Zimbabwe is besides itself over the qualifications of Coventry into the semi-finals. We hope that she will progress to the finals and bring home a medal for Zimbabwe," said Munzwembiri.

Meanwhile the Mighty Warriors returned home this evening after putting up a poor performance at the Olympics were they lost to Germany, Canada and Australia.

Munzwembiri says Zimbabwe is also hopeful of collecting some medals in rowing where Micheen Thornycroft and Andrew Peebles are expected to compete in individual sculls finals tomorrow.
