Doctors Praised For Performing Free Eye Operations For Poor Zimbabweans

Health Minister Dr. Henry Madzorera has commended the joint venture partnership between Zimbabwean and American eye doctors who are currently providing free eye surgical operations to diabetic patients in Harare.

Under the program organized by Eyes for Africa and Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE), the operations are expected to restore eyesight to patients with diabetic complications between Monday and Friday.

The program is taking place at Freenwood Park Eye Center.

Eyes for Africa (EFA) is an Australian sight-restoring organization founded in 2007 by Melbourne ophthalmic nurse Julie Tyers who wanted to “make a difference by treating preventable blindness”.

Madzorera said such a program complements government efforts of making healthcare accessible to everyone.

Founded in 1974 and based in Santa Barbara, California, USA, the nonprofit humanitarian organization utilizes volunteer ophthalmic surgeons to provide sight-restoring surgery to blind individuals worldwide.

SEE International provides the link between hundreds of volunteer eye surgeons and thousands of patients in over 37 countries every year.

It sends expeditions all over the world to restore sight to people who would not be able to afford the needed surgery.
