Zimbabwe's MDC Says Soldiers Murdered Activist For Playing Party Song

The formation of Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said at least four of its activists have been murdered in the past month.

It said one of them, Godknows Dzoro Mtshakazi, was killed by soldiers on August 30 for playing an MDC party song called “Nharembozha” or “Cellphone.”

A statement issued by the MDC said Mtshakazi, 33, was drinking beer with friends at Mufiri Business Center in the Shurugwi South district of Midlands province when four soldiers attacked the MDC members for playing the song.

The MDC said two other activists, Edwin Chingami and Joseph Munyuki, died in Masvingo province and Noel Denias was killed in Banket, Mashonaland West province.

The party's elections director in Midlands province, Obert Ncube, told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that Mtshakazi’s murder arose from an unfortunate incident.
