With the 2006 Premier Soccer League curtain coming down this weekend, Motor Action’s Clement Matawu has been named Innscor soccer star of the year.
Matawu received a Z$250,000 (US$1,000) check Friday at an awards ceremony held in Harare. Highlanders player Honour Gombami was the runner-up.
Matawy was chosen out of 11 finalists including Nkululeko Dhlamini, Obadiah Tarumbwa, Sebastiona Mutizirwa, Honour Gombami, Cuthbert Malajila, Philip Marufu, Carrington Gomba, Obert Moyo, Gilbert Banda, and Master Masitara.
The awards had been dominated by Caps United since 2003 when goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro claimed the prize, followed in 2004 by Cephas Chimedza, a midfielder, and in 2005 by Joseph Kamwendo, another midfielder.
Reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe sought more details on the Innscor prize from sports commentator Michael Kariati.
