Zimbabwe Media Organizations Urge Faster Pace of Media Reform, Liberalization

Media Monitoring Project Senior Researcher Edson Madondo said that despite some progress, comprehensive media reforms have yet to be materialize

Zimbabwean media organizations marked World Press Freedom Day on Monday by marching in Harare and handing a petition demanding accelerated reforms to Zimbabwe Media Commission Chairman Godfrey Majonga at a Harare hotel, where his newly constituted organization was also observing the occasion.

Organizations marching included the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, the Media Institute of Southern Africa, the Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum and the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe.

The National Constitutional Assembly, the Zimbabwe National Students Union and MISA issued statements lamenting the unity government's failure to liberalize the media, saying repressive laws still stifle free expression.

Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe Senior Researcher Edson Madondo told VOA Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that despite some progress comprehensive media reforms have yet to be seen.
