Zimbabwean academics are mourning prominent National University of Science and Technology lecturer Lawton Hikwa who died of respiratory complications in Bulawayo Sunday.

Hikwa asked his friends to pray for him last Thursday writing on Facebook: “I am not well at all. Please remember me in your prayers.”

NUST director of communications and marketing, Felix Moyo told VOA they have lost a dedicated lecturer who put his job above else.

“As NUST community we are devastated. We have lost a key member of our senior management, an experienced academic, a person who took his work seriously,” said Moyo.

Hikwa was known for his affable character and frankness.

“Not only did he love his work, he also believed in the youngsters that he was training,” Moyo added.

A funeral service will be held for Hikwa on Wednesday in Bulawayo. His body will be cremated after that.

Hikwa passed away Sunday morning in a Bulawayo hospital. He is survived by wife, Didekile, and three daughters.

Mourners are gathered at number 6, Ivegill Road in Morningside.
