Chibuku Super Cup Loses Steam As Big Teams Bow Out of Tourney

The Chibuku Super Cup this weekend enters the quarter final stage with little interest from the Zimbabwean football public.

Not many are talking about the tournament following the ouster of giants Dynamos, Highlanders, Chicken Inn and defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars, leaving only Caps United as the biggest team in the contest.

Even the Green Machine risk elimination as they are on the road to Zvishavane for an encounter with Shabanie Mine at Maglas Stadium where the hosts rarely lose.

Although they cannot admit it, the Premier Soccer League and their sponsors, Delta Beverages, are praying for a Caps United win in order to maintain the little public interest still left in the competition.

The Caps United trip to Maglas is one of the four clashes lined up in the tournament as Black Rhinos entertain neighbors Harare City at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday. Although Black Rhinos are at home, they share the same stadium with ground owners, Harare City.

Also on the road are Yadah who are away to Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium. Yadah are unlikely to have a lot of friends in that city after they forced the suspension of Chicken Inn from the tournament.

Yadah are in the quarter finals after the Game Cocks were thrown out of the competition for refusing to have a penalty taken in their first round game against them.

The other quarter final showdown pits Chapungu at home at Ascot Stadium against inconsistent How Mine.

On top of qualifying to represent Zimbabwe in the CAF Confederation Cup, the winners of the competition get a financial reward of $75,000.
