Strike by Zimbabwe Civil Servants Looming as Salary Negotiations Said to Deadlock

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe General Secretary Raymond Majongwe said union leaders will be meeting with their members on Friday in Harare and on Monday in Bulawayo to consider their options

A strike by Zimbabwe's civil servants was looming following a meeting Tuesday between representatives of state workers and government negotiators in Harare, which according to VOA sources ended in a deadlock.

Sources quoted government negotiators as saying that funding is not sufficient now to increase public salaries, but that this might change by April.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe General Secretary Raymond Majongwe told VOA Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that union leaders will be meeting with their members on Friday in Harare and on Monday in the western city of Bulawayo to discuss the way forward.

Reached by VOA, Public Service Minister Eliphas Mukonoweshuro said he had not yet been briefed on developments in Tuesday’s meeting.
