Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has denied that the government intends to nationalize the mining sector contrary to statements by Indigenization Minister Saviour Kasukuwere this week, a spokesman for the prime minister said Thursday.
Kasukuwere told a Euromoney investment conference in Harare on Wednesday that the government will publish new rules for the mining sector Friday providing for the transfer of a 51 percent stake in mining firms to a so-called sovereign wealth fund.
Tsvangirai spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka told VOA Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that the Cabinet told Kasukuwere to come up with sectoral guidelines for indigenization and report back for discussion within in the government.
Reached by VOA, Kasukuwere declined to comment.
