Zimbabwe Police Arrest 3 Masvingo Residents' Trust Leaders

Three leaders of the Masvingo Residents’ Trust were today arrested by police for staging a peaceful demonstration in the city, demanding better services from the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority or ZESA.

The organization’s chairman, Prosper Chiringindi, tells Studio 7 his vice Honest Makasi, Ward 2 secretary Misheck Gava, and Simbarashe Mugari are being held at the local police station where they are likely to face charges of contravening some sections of the Public Order and Security Act – POSA.

Chiringindi says they staged the demonstration after failing to have a meeting with top ZESA officials, who were supposed to address current erratic power cuts.

He says they failed to hold a similar meeting with the officials last month, resulting in public demonstrations, which led to the arrest of some residents.

Police in the city declined to comment amid reports that the three are set to appear in court Thursday.

Chiringindi tells Studio 7 they are not happy with erratic power cuts in the city.
