Five youth members of the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai, who were arrested Saturday following skirmishes with the police and Zanu PF supporters in Chitungwiza appeared in court Monday on charges of causing malicious injury to property.
The MDC-T youths allege they were assaulted by the police for destroying a Zanu PF makeshift office that had just been constructed in St. Mary’s township.
One youth, Gerald Fokisa, is in hospital with a broken leg while six others are said to have been treated and discharged.
Later that night some Zanu PF youths allegedly went door-to-door attacking suspected MDC-T youths.
Police arrested two Zanu PF youths who also appeared in court Monday.
MDC-T national youth chairperson Happymore Chidziva said four of the arrested MDC-T youths,Tonderai Chibuka, Kuda Ngundu, John Chamatumba and Crispen Muchabaiwa together with the Norman Kuzanga and Bertha Matengu of Zanu PF were each granted bail of $150.
Fokisi was granted free bail. They are expected back in court next week.
Zanu PF Youth League official, Innocent Hamandishe, said he was not aware of the incident and wil comment as soon as he gets the update since he was out of Harare. We failed to reach the police for a comment.
