WASHINGTON DC —
The National Vendors’ Union Zimbabwe says it is disturbed by the Harare City Council’s move to sub-contract some vendors’ groups to collect rates from colleagues who sell their wares on the streets of Harare.
Vegetable vendors are expected to pay a $3 fee daily while stall owners at flea markets will be charged between $8 and $10.
Studio 7 reached Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni for a comment but he referred us to Town Clerk Tendai Mahachi who was not reachable.
But National Vendors Union Zimbabwe director, Samuel Wadzayi, said the arrangement is a recipe for disaster as it will likely breed corruption and extortion.
Wadzayi said some of the organisations given the job have been accused of embezzling funds and corruption.
