Zimbabwe Police Arrest Three Over Lake Chivero Boat Tragedy

Police said Latif Ameer, the owner of Chasura Boats, boat captain Fadil Ramon Weale and mechanic Enock Yorani Zulu, were likely to be charged with 11 counts of culpable homicide

Zimbabwean police have arrested three individuals, including the owner of the overloaded boat which capsized on Christmas Day on Lake Chivero outside Harare, in an accident that claimed the lives of 11 children and youths.

Police told the state-controlled Herald newspaper that Latif Ameer, the owner of Chasura Boats, boat captain Fadil Ramon Weale and mechanic Enock Yorani Zulu, were likely to be charged with 11 counts of culpable homicide.

They said the boat, with a capacity of seven passengers, carried 17 that day without life jackets on board and was operating illegally.

The drowning victims were aged six to 16 years and were mostly members of an extended family or friends.

Worship Dumba, president of the Elected Councilors Association of Zimbabwe, told reporter Violet Gonda that municipal leaders will launch a campaign to make sure recreational facilities are equipped with modern equipment to avoid more such accidents.
