Zimbabwe Judge Who Acquitted MDC's Roy Bennett Now Suing Him for Defamation

Bennett lawyer Trust Maanda told VOA reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that he has yet to receive the judge’s complaint against his client

The Zimbabwean High Court judge who acquitted Senator Roy Bennett earlier this year of charges he plotted to assassinate President Robert Mugabe in 2006 is now suing the treasurer of the Movement for Democratic Change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai for US$1 million alleging defamation.

Justice Chinembiri Bhunu claims Bennett made comments to Britain's Guardian newspaper to the effect that he would not get a fair trial because the judge had benefited from President Robert Mugabe's land reform program.

Sources said detectives from the Law and Order Section of the Criminal Investigation Department have been seeking Bennett, prompting his lawyers to write to the police alleging harassment. Bennett lawyer Trust Maanda told VOA reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that he has yet to receive the judge’s complaint against his client.
