Zimbabwe Warriors Seek Friendlies With Soccer Teams Eliminated From World Cup

The Warriors hope to use such friendlies to prepare for the 2011 African Nations Championship competition in February 2011 in Sudan

The Zimbabwe Football Association has invited teams eliminated in the earlier rounds of the World Cup in South Africa to play friendly matches with the Warriors before going home.

However, a friendly match the Warriors had sought with Japan went to Mozambique, whose team was in South Africa and closer at hand for the training exercise.

ZIFA Competitions Manager Jonathan Musavengana told VOA Studio 7 reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye that while his organization was disappointed, it hopes for a friendly with the Japanese team before it heads home.

The Warriors hope to use such friendlies to prepare for the 2011 African Nations Championship competition. The Zimbabwean national team qualified for the finals in Sudan next year after convincing win against Seychelles on Sunday at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. The Warriors piled up a 6-2 aggregate win in two games.

Zimbabwe will now join 15 other nations including hosts Sudan at the African Nations Championship. The tourney, known as CHAN for short, excludes national team players based outside the home country.

The CHAN finals are scheduled to run from February 4 through 25, 2011.
