Zimbabwean Fans Discouraged at African Showing, But Hope to See Progression

Skeptics noted that host South Africa as of Monday had garnered just one point from its 1-1 draw with Mexico on Friday, while favorites Nigeria and Cameroon had yet to post anything in the total points column

With African contenders in the World Cup making unimpressive showings so far for the most part, Zimbabwean fans still hope some African teams will progress from the group stage to the next round.

Skeptics noted that host South Africa as of Monday had garnered just one point from its draw Friday with Mexico, while favorites Nigeria and Cameroon had yet to post anything in the total points column.

Ivory Coast and Algeria similarly remained without points. The big exception, Ghana, appeased its supporters fans with a 1-0 win against Serbia on Sunday, accumulating 3 points.

Zimbabwean sports commentator Omega Sibanda told VOA Studio 7 reporter Marvellous Mhlanga Nyahuye that fans are still behind African teams and are urging coaches to make better player selections.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League clubs saw gate revenues plunge on the weekend as fans stayed away in droves to watch Cup games, as VOA Studio 7 correspondent Michael Kariati reported from Harare.
