Zimbabwe Officials Dismiss Reports President Mugabe Had Prostate Surgery

VOA reported Sunday that President Mugabe had departed Malaysia after his annual leave only to return when his prostate flared up, leading to the surgery which officials have denied

Zimbabwean and Malaysian officials continued on Tuesday to dismiss news reports saying President Robert Mugabe was hospitalized for surgery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after a cancerous prostate gland flared up following a vacation there.

ZANU-PF officials rejected the reports as unfounded speculation, while the Malaysian Foreign Ministry told journalists there was no substance to the reports.

VOA reported Sunday that President Mugabe had departed Malaysia after his annual leave only to return when his prostate flared up, leading to surgery in Kuala Lumpur.

There have been persistent reports in recent years that Mr. Mugabe, who will turn 87 next month, was suffering from prostate cancer.

ZANU-PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that the latest reports of an operation were mere speculation.
