Zimbabwe Cricket Steps Up Campaign to Recruit More Women Players

Women’s Coordinator Caroline Nyamande urged women interested in joining cricket to approach the five franchises running cricket at a provincial level for information on how to get involved

Zimbabwe Cricket has named a provisional 20-member women’s team to represent the nation in home matches leading up to the 2013 Women’s Cricket World Cup in India.

Women’s Coordinator Caroline Nyamande told VOA Studio 7 reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye that there is increased interest in women’s cricket so her organization is stepping up its public education efforts to attract more female players.

Nyamande urged women interested in joining cricket to approach the five franchises running cricket at a provincial level for information on how to get involved.

Although women's cricket has been running for several years in the country, Nyamande admitted that awareness of the opportunity for women has not been sufficiently built.

"We are hoping that this year things will change and we will do everything possible to ensure that we have more female players joining our teams so that we can have a picking for our national team," added Nyamande.

Though 20 women were picked for the provisional squad only 14 will go to Bangladesh in November for qualifiers for the 2013 Women's World Cup Cricket in India.

"We hope to excel at this qualifier and progress to the 2013 Women's World Cup in India which will also give us an opportunity to get more exposure," said Nyamande.
