Zimbabwe Council of Churches Urges End to Political Violence, Hate Speech

The Council of Churches statement followed the placement of advertisements on Sunday in the Zimbabwe Standard weekly newspaper of ads by the Heads of Christian Denominations and the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition calling for lasting peace in the country

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches on Monday urged political leaders to reconsider the timing of new elections to keep the country from sliding into a deeper crisis.

The religious umbrella organization also called for an end to political violence and hate speech, Council Secretary General Solomon Zwana told VOA.

The Council of Churches statement followed the placement of advertisements on Sunday in the Zimbabwe Standard weekly newspaper of ads by the Heads of Christian Denominations and the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition calling for lasting peace in the country.

Crisis Coalition Chairman Jonah Gokova told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that the groups took the initiative because they believe Zimbabweans should live together in peace.
