Harare Mayor, Chombo Fight Over Town Clerk Suspension

A showdown is looming between Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo and Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni on what action to take on Harare Town Clerk, Tendai Mahachi.

Last week, Manyenyeni suspended Mahachi for three months for failing to provide the salary schedule for all senior council employees.

The suspension was effected to pave way for investigations into the city council’s financial management amid allegations that the city’s 18 directors were gobbling over half a million dollars in salaries every month at a time service delivery has plummeted to levels where council fails to replace street light bulbs and other workers were not being paid.

Minister Chombo on Saturday convened a press conference where he ordered the immediate reinstatement of Mahachi. But Manyenyeni told Studio 7 that he met Mahachi on Monday and told him that he remains suspended as he considers the ministerial directive to reinstate him.

Efforts to get a comment from Chombo were, however, futile as he did not immediately pick up his phone.

Harare Residents Trust director Precious Shumba says residents support the mayor.
