WASHINGTON DC —
An American couple, Joy Shulman and Joseph Sparks, have taken to Zimbabwean music, especially the mbira and hosho, which they showcase at various performances, around the United States.
Recently, they performed here at the Voice of America, with the help of Studio 7’s Jonga Kandemiiri, Chris Gande and Marvellous Mhlanga Nyahuye, and another American mbira player, Kirsten Stade, for a division party.
Studio 7’s Ndimyake Mwakalyelye spoke with Shulman, who’s been to Zimbabwe once in 1996, and her husband Sparks, about their love for traditional Zimbabwean music.
