U.S. news organizations report that the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, has resigned.

TV networks reported Thursday that Clapper submitted his letter of resignation on Wednesday evening.

It is unclear why Clapper resigned just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office January 20.
