The number of families affected by heavy rains and strong winds that hit Mberengwa East, Midlands province, last Wednesday has risen to 182.

According to Mberengwa East legislator Joram Gumbo, the heavy storm also killed 3 people and injured 6, who have since been treated and discharged.

Mr. Gumbo said of the families affected, 120 are under Chief Chizungu and 62 are from Chief Bhangwe’s area.

Last week’s storm that brought heavy rains and winds to the area destroyed almost everything in its path, including crops that were still in the fields and leaving several roads impassable. It also destroyed two primary schools, Matabo and Matetsi.

The Civil Protection Unit, the Zimbabwe Red Cross and other local non-governmental organisations have erected tents to shelter the victims and provided food, clothes, blankets and utensils.

Gumbo said the storm has made life more difficult for many who have been living on drought relief.
