ZEC Says Only Political Parties to Monitor Zimbabwe Elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says only political parties can monitor elections in Zimbabwe.

Responding to a request by the National Constitutional Assembly to monitor the 2013 elections, ZEC chairperson Justice Rita Makarau said no organization outside political parties can monitor elections.

The NCA last week wrote to ZEC about its intentions to place two monitors at every polling station in the country and also be allowed to monitor activities in polling stations including the counting process.

Election monitors observe the electoral process and intervene if laws are being violated, while observers gather information and make informed judgment without interfering in the process.

Zimbabwe invites applications from local and foreign observers that are supposed to be acredited by ZEC's observer committee.

NCA information officer Blessing Vava says that as NCA they accept ZEC’s response, adding they are now waiting for the announcement of the election dates.
